Generally the Birth Chart/Janam Patri/Horoscope is prepared on the basis of Date of Birth, Place of Birth and Time of Birth.  The sign or rashi rising at the time of birth at Zodiac is called ascendant or lagan and is written in the first house which in the center of Janam Lagan Patri according to North Indian style and according to South Indian Style where Rashi or Signs are fixed, we write the ascendant or lagan in that rashi or sign.

BIRTH CHART/HOROSCOPE/JANAM LAGAN KUNDLI

A Horoscope is a figure which shows the Planetary position on the Zodiac at the time of birth of a person.  There are twelve houses which are always fixed and starts from the middle of Janam Lagan Patri like in illustrated Horoscope first house is where 5th number in black is written and second house is where 6th number in black is written and 12th house is where 4 number in black is written means that we should move forward in respect of houses from right to left in ascending order or anti clock wise.

As shown in the illustrated Birth Chart/Horoscope/Janam Lagan Kundli number 5 is written in the first house and this first house is called Lagan or Ascendant, it means at the time of Birth Leo or Simha rashi or sign was rising at the horizon, Kanya or Virgo sign or rashi is in the Second house and so on we should move forward in respect of rashis from right to left in ascending order or anti clock wise. 

At the time of birth Sun and Mercury were in the 5th Rashi or Sign that is why written in the Lagan (5th rashi or sign) or in the first house, Rahu was in the 8th Rashi or Sign, so where number 8 in black  is written so we posited the Rahu in 8th rashi(4th house) and so on.
